A manufacturer of custom diffraction gratings, microlens arrays, diffusers, waveguides, and other replicated optics, Holographix LLC, has been acquired by Headwall Photonics. The agreement’s terms weren’t made public.
Don Battistoni, president of Headwall, stated that the company’s holographic master gratings are essential to both its OEM and hyperspectral imaging businesses. According to Battistoni, Holographix’s diffractive gratings may not be identical to Headwall’s fundamental holographic master grating technology, allowing the business to offer higher levels of integration.
“We can now address applications with an order or orders of magnitude bigger volume, which is just not doable in our present fab,” Battistoni said of the Holographix replication method’ inherent scalability.
On July 7, Headwall purchased the software firm perClass BV. The hyperspectral imaging division of Headwall that has previously been used for research applications is the focus of the perClass acquisition, according to Battistoni.
According to Battistoni, the fusion of detector technology, increased processing power, and embedded machine learning/AI has made it possible for hyperspectral to be adopted in difficult machine vision applications internationally. Despite using perClass software on its MV.X platform, Headwall will be able to deliver its hyperspectral solutions for industrial markets more quickly thanks to tighter interaction between Headwall hardware and perClass software.
With the acquisition of optics producer Holographix, Headwall Photonics completed its second acquisition in less than a week. The agreement’s terms were not made public. With thanks to Headwall Photonics.

The Hyperspec MV.X from Headwall offers simple spectrum image analysis for machine vision applications by integrating with a variety of spectral sensors.
According to Battistoni, Headwall’s addition of optical replication capacity to Holographix gives the company the scalability it needs to satisfy growing client demand while also expanding the market opportunities for its core grating technology. Holographix focuses on creating high-performance, tailored photonic solutions for the life sciences, semiconductor, aerospace and defense, and metrology businesses through micro- and nanostructure reproduction.
